Mexico is what happens when you take ancient civilizations, enormous cities, deserts, jungles, mountains, cenotes, ridiculous beaches and some of the best food on Earth, then watch millions of tourists fly directly to Cancún and somehow conclude they’ve seen the country.

That’s adorable.

Mexico is fucking enormous, and the experience changes dramatically depending on where you land. Mexico City is a sprawling monster packed with museums, neighborhoods, markets and enough tacos to make eating six times a day feel like responsible cultural research.

Then there are the ruins.

Maya and Aztec history is scattered across the country in temples, pyramids and archaeological sites that casually remind you advanced civilizations were building extraordinary shit here long before Europeans showed up and started aggressively renaming things.

Head toward the coasts and Mexico switches personalities again. Caribbean water, Pacific surf towns, coral reefs, cenotes and beaches range from genuinely spectacular to aggressively developed resort zones where authenticity occasionally disappears behind an all-inclusive wristband.

Mexico also deserves honesty.

Safety varies significantly by region. Scams exist. Traffic can be chaotic. Tourist destinations can be expensive, and researching where you’re going matters considerably more than blindly following an Instagram itinerary.

But Mexico rewards anyone willing to explore it properly.

It’s colorful, chaotic, historic, delicious and ridiculously diverse.

Come for the beaches if you want.

Eat the tacos. Swim in the cenotes. Explore the ruins.

Then get the fuck out of the resort zone.

Because Mexico is far more interesting than whatever your all-inclusive buffet is trying to convince you it is.
