Welcome to Cardiff
Cardiff arrival: Wales welcomes you from thirteen miles away
You landed at Cardiff Airport in the Vale of Glamorgan, about 13 miles west of Cardiff, because national gateways apparently enjoy a little geographic suspense. The terminal is compact enough that escaping it should not become an expedition. Your practical choices are the 905 shuttle to Rhoose railway station, the 304 bus toward Cardiff, a prearranged taxi or a rental car. Check the live timetable before committing, particularly after an evening arrival, and do not assume the railway station is attached to the terminal merely because its name contains the words Cardiff International Airport.
Cardiff transport: shuttle first, train second, city eventually
The quickest public transport combination is the 905 shuttle from the terminal to Rhoose Cardiff International Airport station, then a train to Cardiff Central. Transport for Wales sells an integrated ticket and estimates the full trip at about 48 minutes. The 304 bus runs directly from the airport through Barry and Cardiff Bay to the city center, but the airport warns that this is the slower option. Taxi is the painless choice for heavy luggage, awkward flight times or a group, while a rental car is useful for exploring the coast and rural Wales. Inside Cardiff, the center is walkable and buses cover the wider city, so hiring a car solely to admire downtown traffic is an ambitious use of money.
Cardiff safety: friendly capital, opportunistic pockets
Cardiff is generally straightforward for visitors, but city-center crowds, nightlife and major rugby or concert days create excellent working conditions for phone thieves and pickpockets. South Wales Police has specifically reported phone snatching in the city center, Roath, Cathays, Cardiff Bay and Riverside, often involving offenders on bikes and activity between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. Keep your phone away from the curb, stay aware when wearing headphones and plan a trusted ride home after drinking. Do not leave luggage or electronics visible in a parked vehicle because police have also warned about thefts from central car parks. Enjoy the compact center, but do not donate your phone to someone commuting by bicycle.
