Norway feels like someone gave nature an unlimited landscaping budget, told it subtlety was optional, and then charged everyone $14 for a beer to pay for the results.
The country is fucking ridiculous.
Mountains plunge directly into fjords. Waterfalls pour down cliffs seemingly everywhere. Roads twist through landscapes that make pulling over every seven minutes feel completely reasonable. Head far enough north and the mountains become sharper, the towns become smaller, and eventually the northern lights might start dancing overhead because apparently the daytime scenery wasn’t showing off enough.
Norway is basically landscape photography on easy mode.
Travel logistics are another matter.
Distances can be enormous. A destination that looks nearby on the map may involve mountains, tunnels, ferries and several hours of driving around a fjord because Norway apparently considered straight roads architecturally offensive.
Then there’s the price of everything.
Norway is fucking expensive.
Hotels can hurt. Restaurants can hurt more. Ordering alcohol may trigger a brief internal discussion about retirement planning. Suddenly that gas-station sandwich starts looking like responsible fiscal policy.
The weather also deserves veto power over your itinerary. Clouds, rain, wind and snow can arrive whenever they damn well please, particularly when you’ve scheduled something specifically because the forecast looked perfect.
But Norway gets away with all of it.
Because around the next corner is another fjord, mountain, fishing village or coastline that makes you stop and stare.
Norway is expensive, dramatic, unpredictable and almost offensively beautiful.
Come for the fjords.
Stay because the scenery is spectacular.
Leave because you can no longer afford dinner.
