Chile looks like someone accidentally dragged the bottom edge of a country thousands of miles down the side of South America and nobody bothered fixing it.

Seriously.

This fucking thing is long.

That ridiculous geography is also why Chile can pack an absurd amount of scenery into one country. In the north, the Atacama Desert looks like Earth temporarily gave up on vegetation and started testing landscapes for Mars. Salt flats, volcanoes and some of the clearest skies on the planet make the place feel completely disconnected from normal geography.

Then head south.

Santiago sits beneath the Andes because apparently a normal city skyline wasn’t dramatic enough. Vineyards spread through valleys nearby, producing enough excellent wine to make “researching Chilean culture” a suspiciously convenient afternoon activity.

Keep going and eventually Patagonia arrives.

Mountains become sharper, glaciers appear, lakes turn ridiculous shades of blue and the weather starts treating your itinerary as a personal challenge. Wind can become an event. Sunshine is temporary. Packing for four seasons isn’t paranoia. It’s basic fucking preparation.

Chile’s biggest travel problem is Chile itself.

Distances are enormous. Seeing the Atacama, Santiago and Patagonia in one trip involves serious mileage, domestic flights or an irresponsible amount of driving.

But that’s also what makes Chile spectacular.

It’s desert, mountains, glaciers, volcanoes, wine and Pacific coastline stretched across one absurdly narrow country.

Come for the Andes.

Stay for Patagonia.
