This city is enormous, and “nearby” remains a philosophical term.

Congonhas transport: the airport finally has a train, mostly

Line 17 Gold opened its airport station in March 2026 and connects Congonhas with Lines 5 Lilac and 9 Emerald. It is physically linked to the passenger terminal by a tunnel, which is the rare airport project that understands luggage. However, the line is still operating transitionally on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., so check the live metro status before treating it as a universal solution. Outside those hours, Aena lists municipal buses linking the airport with the wider transit network. Official taxis and app-based rides are practical for direct trips, but road congestion can erase their apparent advantage. For Guarulhos connections, use the dedicated airport bus and allow a substantial buffer.

São Paulo safety: put the phone away before the city volunteers to

São Paulo rewards alert, deliberate movement. Keep phones out of sight on streets and near vehicle windows, carry limited cash, avoid expensive jewellery and use secure transport after dark. Pickpocketing, card fraud and express kidnapping occur in Brazil, so verify payment amounts and never accept unsolicited rides. Busy terminals and metro stations deserve extra attention to bags and passports. Avoid unfamiliar empty streets, especially at night, and ask accommodation staff about current neighborhood conditions because safety varies sharply block by block. Heavy rain can flood roads and disrupt transport, so monitor local alerts. The city is energetic, fascinating and very good at noticing distracted visitors before they notice it.
