Jordan is one of those countries where you arrive for Petra, because apparently carving an entire fucking city into sandstone cliffs wasn’t ambitious enough, and then discover the rest of the country has been quietly sitting there waiting to show off.
Petra absolutely deserves the hype.
Walking through the narrow Siq before the Treasury suddenly appears in front of you is one of those rare travel moments where seeing approximately eight billion photographs beforehand doesn’t completely ruin the surprise.
Holy shit.
And Petra keeps going. Tombs, temples, caves, viewpoints and enough stairs to make you question whether the Nabataeans had some unresolved hostility toward future tourists.
Then there’s Wadi Rum, where enormous sandstone formations rise out of the desert and everything looks suspiciously like Mars. That’s probably why filmmakers keep using it whenever Earth apparently isn’t dramatic enough.
Jordan also gives you the Dead Sea, where you can float effortlessly while discovering every microscopic cut on your body simultaneously. Amman delivers ancient ruins, chaotic streets and excellent food without pretending to be some polished tourism theme park.
Jordan isn’t perfect. Summer can be brutally hot. Petra involves serious walking. Desert dust will infiltrate possessions you didn’t know you owned. And regional tensions mean checking current travel advisories before visiting is simply intelligent planning.
But Jordan itself can be remarkably rewarding.
It’s ancient, rugged, welcoming, visually ridiculous and packed with far more than Petra.
Come for the Treasury.
Stay because Jordan apparently decided one world-famous archaeological wonder wasn’t enough.
