Costa Rica feels like someone took volcanoes, jungles, waterfalls, beaches and an unreasonable amount of wildlife, squeezed everything into a tiny Central American country and then covered the whole thing in the phrase pura vida.

And honestly?

It fucking works.

You can wake up near a volcano, drive through cloud forest, watch monkeys doing questionable monkey shit beside the road and finish the day staring at the Pacific while convincing yourself this is somehow a normal Tuesday.

The volcanoes alone are worth the effort. Irazú climbs high enough that you can look down at the clouds, which is spectacular right up until you realize the temperature dropped approximately seventeen wardrobe decisions ago. Apparently tropical country does not automatically mean tropical mountain.

Good information to have beforehand.

Then there are rainforests packed with sloths, toucans and enough biodiversity to make every walk feel like a scavenger hunt. Add waterfalls, hot springs, surf towns and beaches on both the Pacific and Caribbean sides, and Costa Rica becomes dangerously easy to over-schedule.

The roads will fix that.

Distances look short on a map. They are not. Mountain roads twist endlessly, traffic appears when least convenient, and Google Maps occasionally provides arrival times based on what I can only assume is helicopter transportation.

Costa Rica isn’t particularly cheap anymore, either. Tourism has found it enthusiastically.

But the payoff remains enormous.

Costa Rica is wild, green, beautiful and ridiculously easy to explore badly.

Come for the volcanoes.

Stay for the wildlife.

And embrace pura vida, because your carefully planned itinerary is probably fucked anyway.
