Welcome to Buenos Aires
Aeroparque arrival: Buenos Aires starts before your suitcase stops rolling
HOLY SHIT. You landed at Aeroparque Jorge Newbery, the Buenos Aires airport that is actually in Buenos Aires instead of requiring an expedition from Ezeiza. AEP sits beside the Río de la Plata in Palermo, roughly 25 minutes from major central hotels when traffic behaves. Start with nearby Palermo parks, then move toward Recoleta, the historic center, San Telmo and Puerto Madero. The city rewards wandering with architecture, cafés, markets, football and dinners scheduled at the hour other countries begin regretting dessert. Confirm which Buenos Aires airport handles your onward flight, because AEP and EZE are not interchangeable terminals. An airport transfer between them requires serious time, and shouting the same city name at traffic will not accelerate it.
Buenos Aires transport: buy the SUBE card and join the choreography
Official taxis, remises, private transfers and public buses connect Aeroparque with the city. Public transport requires a rechargeable SUBE card, so obtain and fund one before attempting to look casually local. Buses cover almost everywhere and run around the clock, while the Subte is usually faster for central corridors but does not enter the Aeroparque terminal. Buenos Aires is excellent on foot by neighborhood, and licensed black-and-yellow taxis are plentiful. Avoid renting a car for ordinary sightseeing unless congestion, toll registration, scarce parking and aggressive lane interpretation sound recreational. Use the city’s official journey planner, allow peak-hour buffers and state cross streets when giving taxi directions. The grid helps until one of the grand diagonal avenues arrives to remind you that geometry also drinks espresso.
Buenos Aires safety: guard the bag while admiring the balcony
Buenos Aires is a major tourism city, but phone snatching, pickpocketing and bag theft target distracted visitors in transport hubs, cafés and crowded streets. Keep bags attached to you rather than hanging from chairs, use indoor ATMs, limit visible jewelry and avoid poorly lit streets alone late at night. Use licensed taxis or properly booked transport, especially from airports. Demonstrations are common around central government areas and can interrupt streets and transit, so leave if crowds become tense. The city operates tourist assistance and specialist tourist police services. Call 911 for urgent police help or 107 for medical emergencies. Enjoy the late nights, but keep control of your drink, phone and return route. Buenos Aires provides enough drama without donating your passport to the supporting cast.
