Welcome to Guangzhou
Guangzhou arrival: three terminals and one mandatory reality check
Welcome to Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, a gigantic gateway that added Terminal 3 and then rearranged airline assignments because apparently one terminal map was too relaxing. Confirm the terminal in your airline record on the day of travel. Terminal 3 handles many international, regional and domestic operations, while other domestic flights remain elsewhere. If you arrive at the wrong building, official 24-hour shuttles and intercity rail connect the terminals, but the transfer can consume meaningful time. Follow airport signs, keep your hotel name and address in Chinese, and complete arrival formalities before deciding that every illuminated corridor probably leads downtown.
Guangzhou transport: excellent rail, provided you read the terminal label
Terminals 2 and 3 have direct rail options, while current Terminal 3 metro access uses Lines 3 or 9 to Gaozeng followed by a dedicated shuttle. Intercity trains link Terminal 3 with regional destinations and other airport terminals. Taxis and app-booked cars use designated pickup areas, not whichever curb looks emotionally available. Guangzhou’s metro is extensive and efficient once inside the city, but foreign payment and navigation apps may require setup before arrival. Save addresses in Chinese, carry a usable payment method and leave extra time during peak commuting periods. Renting a car is unnecessary for most visitors and requires a valid Chinese driving licence.
Guangzhou safety: low crime, strict laws and typhoon interruptions
Serious crime against visitors is relatively rare, but protect belongings in crowded transport hubs and beware of inflated-bill tea, massage and bar scams. QR-code phishing is also a practical concern in a city where payments and services frequently begin with a scan. Chinese national-security and public-order laws are broad and strictly enforced. Avoid demonstrations, do not photograph restricted military or security locations, and assume online political activity can attract attention. Southern China is affected by typhoons from roughly May through November, which can interrupt flights and ground transport. Follow official warnings and airline notices rather than asking the weather to respect your carefully colour-coded itinerary.
