The airport is close enough to make the transfer simple and busy enough to attract people offering transportation with spectacular confidence. Cartagena is a major tourist city, but robbery, phone snatching, taxi crime and drug-assisted theft are real risks on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. Use prebooked or authorized taxis, avoid walking alone on quiet streets after dark and do not display expensive phones, cameras or jewelry. Never accept food, drinks, cigarettes or invitations from strangers, and do not bring newly met people back to your accommodation. Government guidance reports criminals using incapacitating drugs in bars, restaurants, taxis and dating encounters. Small tourist boats also deserve scrutiny, especially during rough northern-coast seas. Cartagena is absolutely visitable, but treating every friendly approach as a spontaneous cultural exchange is how your vacation becomes a police report.
