The city’s elevation can leave newly arrived visitors breathless or headachy, so hydrate, pace the first day and do not interpret altitude as a personal challenge. Heavy summer rain can flood roads and multiply travel time. Mexico City is enormously rewarding, but the successful visit is built on neighborhood awareness, confirmed transportation and enough schedule padding to survive traffic’s ongoing attempt to become performance art.
