Welcome to Marseille

Marseille arrival: the city is south, your patience is in transit

Welcome to Marseille. Now what the fuck do you do? First, accept that Marseille Provence Airport sits near Marignane, not beside the Old Port where your mental montage already began. The simplest city transfer is the direct A1 coach to Marseille Saint-Charles station. The airport currently advertises departures as often as every ten minutes during much of the day and a normal journey of roughly 30 to 50 minutes, with traffic invited to ruin the optimistic end of that range. You can also take the short LeBus13 connection to Vitrolles Aéroport Marseille Provence station and continue by regional train. That option is useful for destinations along the rail corridor, but it adds a transfer. Taxis and rental cars are available. Before boarding anything, confirm whether your lodging is actually in Marseille, Aix-en-Provence, or another Provençal town, because each has its own airport coach and France has graciously provided several stations with nearly interchangeable names.

Marseille transport: metro, tram, train, and strategic walking

Saint-Charles is the useful transport hinge for central Marseille, with metro, regional trains, long-distance rail, and buses gathered around one hill that luggage makes taller. Use the metro and tram for central districts, then walk where practical around the Old Port, Le Panier, and nearby waterfront. Regional trains make Aix, Cassis, Toulon, and other cities feasible without a car, although some final destinations still require a bus or serious incline. A rental car is most useful for rural Provence or an itinerary poorly served by rail. Inside Marseille it delivers congestion, restricted streets, parking expense, and a recurring philosophical debate with scooters. For the Calanques, use official public-transport and park-access guidance rather than assuming you can drive directly to every trail. Summer closures, reservations, and fire controls can change access even when a mapping app remains cheerfully unaware.

Marseille safety: secure the phone and check the Calanques

Marseille is a working port city with busy stations, nightlife, beaches, and crowded visitor areas. Keep phones, passports, and wallets secured around Saint-Charles, public transport, markets, and the Old Port. Pickpockets can use distraction teams, so a stranger creating sudden confusion may not be auditioning for street theatre. Do not leave valuables visible in a parked car. At beaches, understand the flag system and follow lifeguard instructions because local sea conditions can be dangerous. Hiking in the Calanques requires water, sun protection, suitable shoes, and a current access check. From June through September, forest and massif access is regulated daily according to heat, dryness, and wildfire danger, and entry can be prohibited. Sugiton also requires free advance reservations during designated busy periods. Marseille is vivid, chaotic, generous, and entirely worth exploring. Just avoid donating your phone to a pickpocket or your body heat to a limestone trail at noon.
