Delta Air Lines offers Same-Day Flight Changes for eligible Delta Mainline and Delta Connection itineraries, providing travelers with valuable flexibility when their plans change. However, inconsistent workflow and information in the Fly Delta app and from under-trained Reservations agents has created significant confusion about how the published rules apply.

Although this article is not published or endorsed by Delta, it closely follows Delta’s published rules and eligibility requirements. You can use it as a reference if the guidance you receive appears inconsistent with those policies.

When Delta Says One Thing and Does Another

If you are Gold/Platinum/Diamond, there is little benefit to booking the Extra experience as you receive complimentary Same Day flight changes as one of your included Medallion benefits.
If you are Silver or non-status holder (SkyMiles memeber) and need to make same day changes, it will cost you $75. If you booked the Extra experience the same day flight change fee is waived.
When you have purchased (not upgraded to) Comfort+, Delta First, Delta Premium Select or Delta One cabins, they routinely say “The fare class isn’t available, it will be $xxxx.xx to confirm for that flight. THAT IS WRONG. Main Cabin is the only cabin of service that uses fare class availability rules. If the agent insists, quote the policy wording below and ask for a supervisor to handle the rest of the transaction. The Delta Air Lines published policy clearly states: If you have a premium product ticket like Delta One®, Delta Premium Select or Delta First (excluding Delta Basic experiences), you may make a Same-Day Confirmed change as long as a seat is available in the cabin purchased or a lower cabin. -AND- If you are traveling in Delta Comfort (excluding the Delta Comfort Basic experience), you may make a Same-Day Confirmed change as long as a seat is available in Delta Comfort.
If you make same day flight changes to a different flight where a seat in your paid cabin is not available (example: I booked First Class, but want to confirm for an earlier flight but First & C+ is full and only Main is available), you can take the Main cabin seat, but will not be eligible for a refund based on flown cabin difference. In the eyes of Delta, this is a voluntary change and you accepted the change.
