It’s no myth that Delta Air Lines has been strategically thanking fucking its highest revenue passengers with complimentary Comfort+ and Delta First upgrdes. First Class Complimentary upgrades have largely left on a one-way ticket elsewhere and upgrades to Comfort+ seem to just be the leftover middle seats no one will pay for.
The rules determining who gets upgraded, when they get upgraded and where they land on the upgrade list have also become increasingly complicated. Rather than regurgitating Delta’s collection of sequential logic, eligibility rules, priority criteria and tie-breakers, I spent the time required to understand how the current system actually works.
More importantly, I turned that logic into a graphical upgrade wizard that walks through the rules and gives you a much clearer picture of where you should rank and why.
Before using it, however, there is one extremely important concept every Medallion member needs to understand, particularly if you’re new to the program: Complimentary upgrades are always “subject to upgrade availability.”
Those five words do an extraordinary amount of work.
Being eligible for an upgrade does not mean Delta has a seat available for complimentary upgrades. A First Class seat can remain empty, appear for sale, or disappear while Delta waits for someone to buy it rather than releasing it to the complimentary upgrade pool.
Read this explanation of upgrade inventory and availability before going much further. Understanding how Delta controls upgrade inventory explains a considerable amount of the apparent nonsense surrounding complimentary upgrades.
Although this article is not published or endorsed by Delta, it closely follows Delta’s published rules and eligibility requirements. You can use it as a reference if the guidance you receive or more importantly what you experience appears inconsistent with those policies.

Upgrades At The Gate
Your Upgrade Profile
The six criteria listed above determine the outcome in nearly every situation. Delta does have additional tie-breakers buried farther down the list, including Corporate Traveler status, MQD spend and the date and time the upgrade request was made. Those rarely come into play unless Delta has somehow managed to produce two passengers who are virtually identical on paper.

What to watch out for
When Delta Says One Thing and Does Another
- Gate agent competency and consistency post-covid is horrid. Many (not all) gate agents don’t process upgrades, or selectively upgrade certain NRSA people ahead of the published list. This happens FAR more frequently than we all know and ever time I have documented it with screenshots, approached the GA (professionally) to get clarification and/or spoke with Customer Care, “we just don’t know why that happened” is the answer I always get. This is not befitting of this ‘so called’ Premium Airline.
