Delta’s official policy policy is this: “For First Class upgrades, Diamond and Platinum Medallion Members will clear beginning 120 hours (5 days) prior to departure, Gold Medallion Members will clear beginning 72 hours (3 days) prior to departure and Silver Medallion Members will clear beginning 24 hours (1 day) prior to departure, subject to upgrade availability.” …blah blah blah, there’s some more rules in the fine print.
The only thing that matters in this policy is the phrase “subject to upgrade availability.”
What does subject to availability mean? It means that if you’re new to the Medallion program – let’s say you just earned Gold it’s 5 days before your flight and you see 5 open seats in First Class – this doesn’t mean those seats are available for complimentary upgrades.
All upgrade inventory is carefully control by the gremlins in Revenue Management – the most hated department by ALL Medallion members worldwide. Revenue management’s entire job is to sell every seat for whoever will pay for it. If they are forecasting they can’t sell it, they might break off some crumbs to the complimentary upgrade inventory. More likely is that they will hold on to whatever seats are left and offer it for a firesale purchase in the app to whoever has FOMO. If there are no takers, the inventory is released to the gate agents which should process upgrades for all remaining seats (we call this the battlefield upgrade).
Key takeaway: Seats available is not equal seats available for complimentary upgrades.
