The Netherlands is what happens when an entire country looks at the fucking ocean and says: Move.
Most civilizations see water and build somewhere else. The Dutch built dams, pumps and enormous engineering projects, reclaimed the land and then covered it with canals, tulips, windmills and approximately 47 billion bicycles.
Because apparently geography is just a suggestion.
Amsterdam gets most of the attention. The canals are beautiful, the architecture leans at angles that would trigger an immediate structural investigation anywhere else, and bicycles travel through the city with the confidence of an apex predator.
Seriously.
Watch the fucking bike lane.
Amsterdam also gives you world-class museums, cafés, historic neighborhoods and, of course, the Red Light District, where curiosity and people-watching can easily consume an evening while you quietly reconsider several definitions of window shopping.
But the Netherlands isn’t just Amsterdam.
Leave the capital and you’ll find smaller historic cities, enormous flower fields, windmills, beaches and countryside so aggressively flat you can practically watch tomorrow’s weather approaching from Belgium.
And yes, the weather can be gray, windy and wet. Hotels in Amsterdam can be painfully expensive. Tourist-heavy areas occasionally feel like the entire European backpacking population arrived simultaneously.
But the Netherlands works.
Trains connect everything. Cities are walkable. Cycling infrastructure makes other countries look like they simply forgot bicycles exist.
It’s historic, progressive, beautiful, compact and almost suspiciously functional.
Come for Amsterdam.
Stay for everything beyond it.
And before crossing anything resembling pavement, look both ways.
Then look again.
Because that bicycle absolutely has the right of way, and it knows it.
