Bilbao arrival: the airport forgot to include a railway

Good news: you made it to Bilbao. Bad news: you are still at the airport, staring at a terminal in Loiu while the pintxos, titanium architecture and medieval lanes are several kilometres away. Bilbao is compact enough to explore without turning a city break into an endurance event. The Guggenheim and the riverfront anchor the modern side, while the pedestrian Casco Viejo supplies the Seven Streets, Ribera Market and enough tightly packed bars to make choosing one feel unnecessarily academic. The mountains around the city add drama and occasionally rain with commitment. Decide whether you want art, old streets, food or a coastal detour before leaving BIO, because the airport also serves direct regional coaches and your first sensible decision may be not entering Bilbao at all.

Escaping BIO: one useful bus and zero airport trains

Bilbao Airport has no passenger rail station, so do not stand outside waiting for a train that exists only in your optimism. The official A3247 Bizkaibus service runs year-round between the terminal and Bilbao Intermodal, stopping at Alameda Recalde, Plaza Moyua and Gran Via. Aena currently lists airport departures every 15 minutes from 06:10 to 23:40, but check the live timetable before trusting those numbers with your flight. Direct coaches also connect BIO with Donostia-San Sebastian, Zarautz, Arrasate-Mondragon, Onati and Vitoria-Gasteiz. Official taxis leave from the terminal and make sense for late arrivals, heavy luggage or accommodation away from the bus stops. Once downtown, walk the river and old quarter, then use Metro Bilbao, tram, local rail, buses or the Artxanda funicular for longer jumps. A Barik card works across several Bizkaia transport systems. A rental car is useful for the coast and rural Basque Country, but city parking and the pedestrian old quarter are excellent reminders that possession of a car does not create somewhere to put it.

Bilbao safety: guard the bag and respect Atlantic weather

Bilbao is generally manageable for visitors, but Spain’s official travel guidance still warns about street theft and distraction teams, particularly around airports, stations and busy tourist areas. Keep passports, phones and wallets controlled at Bilbao Intermodal, on crowded public transport and in packed bars rather than decorating an open pocket for local entrepreneurship. Do not leave luggage visible in a rental car, and be skeptical of strangers who claim there is a problem with the vehicle. Demonstrations are usually peaceful, but leave if a crowd becomes disorderly. Save 112 for emergencies and remember that the regional police are the Ertzaintza. The area’s more distinctive hazard is Atlantic weather. Heavy rain can make river paths, roads and mountain trails unpleasant or unsafe, while the Biscay coast can deliver strong surf and currents. Check official weather warnings before coastal walks or hikes, stay back from exposed seawalls in rough conditions and bring actual rain protection. Bilbao does not care that the forecast icon looked vaguely friendly when you left the hotel.
