Welcome to Boston

Boston arrival: four terminals and one aggressive curb

Welcome to Boston Logan, where terminals A, B, C and E surround an airport road system designed to test whether jet lag improves reflexes. Check the terminal before arranging pickup and follow ground-transport signs instead of crossing random lanes with luggage. Free Massport shuttles connect every terminal with the rental-car center, the Blue Line’s Airport station and the water-transport dock. They generally arrive every five to six minutes. Terminal traffic can slow sharply at rush hour, during construction or when New England weather decides aviation has had enough confidence.

BOS transfer: the free Silver Line earns its keep

The SL1 Silver Line bus is free from Logan to South Station, where travelers can connect with the Red Line, commuter rail, Amtrak and intercity buses. For East Boston, downtown stops on the Blue Line or connections toward the north side, take the free airport shuttle to Airport station. Water taxis use the airport dock, also reached by shuttle, and can bypass road traffic when schedules cooperate. Taxis and rideshares remain available, but use the designated pickup area, verify the vehicle and expect tunnel traffic to convert a short geographic distance into a character-building event.

Boston safety: winter and cobblestones form an alliance

Boston is broadly manageable for visitors, but watch phones, wallets and bags on crowded transit, around major events and in nightlife districts. Confirm rideshare plates and driver details before entering. Winter storms can suspend flights and transit, coat sidewalks with ice and trigger snow-emergency parking rules. Coastal storms and heavy rain can also flood low-lying roads near the harbor and airport. Sign up for official alerts, wear footwear suitable for brick and ice, and never walk onto frozen ponds. The historic street pattern is confusing enough without adding a preventable emergency.

Centralia: The Town Where Hell Is Technically Downstairs

Beneath the quiet forests of eastern Pennsylvania, an underground mine fire has been burning continuously since 1962, and it destroyed an entire town in the process. Centralia wasn’t abandoned because the mines closed. It was erased because the ground itself became uninhabitable. Today, only empty streets, forgotten cemeteries, and an invisible inferno remain, creating one of America’s most infamous dark tourism destinations. Once home to the legendary Graffiti Highway and widely associated with the eerie world of Silent Hill, Centralia is a haunting reminder that sometimes the scariest places aren’t fiction at all.

Arlington National Cemetery: One Name I Actually Knew

Arlington National Cemetery is more than famous graves and perfectly aligned white headstones. It’s hundreds of thousands of individual stories, including one belonging to a girl I grew up with who made the ultimate sacrifice. Add the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and an absolutely fucking gorgeous autumn backdrop, and this is one place where eventually you just put the camera down and remember.
