BUD arrival: welcome to Budapest, now choose the correct bus

Welcome to Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport, about 21 kilometres from the city center and connected to it by several transport options that look similar until the ticket inspector explains otherwise. Arrivals for Terminal 2A and 2B share the ground-transport area, so follow official signs and confirm whether your accommodation is closer to Deák Ferenc tér, Kálvin tér or another metro connection. Buy forints only from an official bank or ATM, keep the hotel address available offline and ignore unsolicited transportation offers. Budapest is efficient once you understand the system, which is a charming way of saying preparation prevents an expensive educational experience.

Budapest transport: 100E is direct, 200E demands participation

The 100E Airport Express runs around the clock between BUD and central Deák Ferenc tér via Kálvin tér, with an airport-specific ticket required. The 200E also runs 24 hours, connecting Terminal 2 with Kőbánya-Kispest for onward metro service, and it uses regular public-transport fares rather than the 100E ticket. Buy and validate the correct product for every required leg. Licensed taxis use regulated fares, and Budapest’s transport authority publishes current airport charges and authorized companies. Once central, metro, trams and buses cover the city extremely well. A rental car is usually unnecessary unless you are leaving Budapest, and downtown parking will happily punish anyone who disagrees.

Budapest safety: ruin bars do not require ruined judgment

Budapest is generally manageable for visitors, but official advice warns that bag-snatching and pickpocketing are common on busy public transport, in stations, markets and crowded tourist areas. Keep bags closed and visible, especially when boarding or leaving trains. Some bars and restaurants present inflated bills, and visitors have been pressured to withdraw cash. Check menus and prices before ordering, keep your bank card and drink in sight and do not follow strangers or taxi drivers to a recommended club. Use licensed taxis and official ATMs. Carry your passport because police can require original identification. The city is beautiful after dark, but the Danube panorama does not personally guarantee your wallet’s safe return.
