Heathrow arrival: welcome to London, eventually

HOLY SHIT. You landed at Heathrow, a five-terminal aviation ecosystem where “arrived” means the aircraft stopped and your suitcase has entered negotiations. Check the terminal number before planning anything because Terminals 2 and 3 share one central area, while Terminals 4 and 5 have separate rail stations and road access. Follow official signs through immigration, baggage reclaim and customs, then verify live transport status before leaving arrivals. Central London is roughly 15 miles east, but travel time depends on the train chosen, road traffic and whether engineering works have decided your itinerary needed personality.

LHR transfer: fast train, useful train or very patient Underground

Heathrow offers three direct rail choices into central London. Heathrow Express reaches Paddington from Terminals 2 and 3 in about 15 minutes and normally departs every 15 minutes. The Elizabeth line serves Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street and other stations, with six trains an hour at Heathrow and free rail transfers between airport terminals using contactless payment or a terminal-transfer ticket. The Piccadilly line serves every terminal and is the cheapest direct rail option, but the trip into central London takes under an hour and luggage joins ordinary Underground crowds. Coaches and local buses serve additional destinations. Use an official black cab rank or a properly pre-booked private-hire vehicle. Anyone offering a spontaneous minicab inside arrivals has confused your fatigue with a business opportunity.

London safety: secure the phone before admiring the Tube map

London is a comparatively safe major city, but tourists and transport hubs attract pickpockets, luggage thieves, scams and phone snatching. Keep bags closed and within reach, especially on escalators, platforms and crowded trains. Do not stand beside the road holding a phone loosely because thieves using bicycles, mopeds and scooters target distracted pedestrians. Only licensed black cabs can be hailed in the street. Private-hire cars must be booked, and the driver and vehicle details should match the booking. British Transport Police says rail crime is uncommon, but recommends populated carriages, visible luggage and well-lit areas near CCTV. Text 61016 for non-emergency rail incidents and call 999 or 112 in an emergency. Check the final train and any overnight closure before staying out late. London will happily keep going after your transport stops.
