Lagos arrival: the airport was merely the opening argument

Welcome to Lagos. Now what the fuck do you do? First, confirm which Murtala Muhammed terminal has received you because the airport complex includes international and domestic facilities, and a confident walk toward the wrong building is not a transportation plan. FAAN operates customer-service desks in the international arrival halls and domestic arrival area, so use them when directions or official ground-transport information are unclear. The airport authority advises arriving at least four hours before an international departure, which tells you everything necessary about treating the return trip like a casual last-minute errand. Keep your baggage close, ignore unsolicited helpers and arrange the next leg before stepping into the arrivals crowd.

LOS transfer: prearranged driver, verified identity, zero heroics

FAAN states that its airports do not operate airport shuttle services. Ground-transport information is available inside the airport, and regulated commercial vehicles must operate within the airport’s security framework. For visitors, the safest practical choice is a car and driver arranged through a reputable hotel, host or established travel provider. Official travel guidance specifically warns that criminals pose as airport greeters, taxis and app-based rides can present robbery or kidnapping risks, and Nigeria’s public transport has limited regulatory oversight. Make the driver identify you by name and independently confirm the vehicle and driver with whoever booked it before leaving. Lagos traffic can be severe, so carry water, keep your phone charged and allow a ridiculous buffer for every appointment. The Lagos Red Line has a proposed airport connection, but the official network description does not establish a completed passenger rail link inside LOS. Do not plan an airport train transfer that does not yet exist.

Lagos safety: verify the driver before joining the traffic opera

Lagos requires deliberate situational awareness, not generic advice to use common sense. Limit road travel after dark, avoid demonstrations and large crowds, keep vehicle doors locked and windows closed, and do not walk alone in isolated areas. Violent crime, armed robbery, carjacking and kidnapping risks are real, while traffic crashes are common because road conditions, vehicle maintenance and driving standards vary. If a greeter cannot prove they are your arranged contact, remain inside the terminal and call the hotel or host yourself. Keep valuables out of sight and do not resist during a robbery. Avoid photographing airport facilities or other official buildings because photography in secure areas is illegal. Monitor current security reporting throughout the visit, vary predictable routines when possible and use 112 or 199 for emergencies. Lagos is energetic and rewarding, but it does not issue refunds for preventable confidence.
