Welcome to Lyon Metro
Lyon arrival: the city is 25 kilometers that way
Good news: you made it to Lyon. Bad news: Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport is 25 kilometers east of the center, so the medieval lanes and unapologetic quantities of food are not waiting outside baggage claim. Follow signs for the transport center between the terminals and railway station before committing to a random curb. The Rhônexpress connects the airport with Lyon Part-Dieu in under 30 minutes, serving Vaulx-en-Velin La Soie and Meyzieu ZI along the way. It normally runs every 15 to 30 minutes and is the simplest city-center option when time matters. Buy the ticket before boarding and check the latest service notice. If your destination is outside central Lyon, the airport also has regional coaches, taxis, rental cars and a TGV station. Decide which Lyon station or neighborhood you actually need because Part-Dieu, Perrache and Saint-Exupéry are three different answers to a question your jet-lagged brain may insist is one answer.
Lyon transport: choose the train before traffic chooses you
For central Lyon, use Rhônexpress to Part-Dieu, then connect to metro, tram or local bus. A cheaper public-transport route is available using airport-serving TCL buses and a tram connection, but only selected bus trips continue to the terminal, so read the timetable rather than boarding on spiritual faith. Taxis wait outside the terminals and TGV station; the airport lists indicative city-center fares around 70 euros by day and 95 euros at night, Sundays and holidays. The TGV station beside the terminal directly links the airport with cities across France and Italy. Those trains are useful for regional or intercity travel, but they are not the normal train into central Lyon. Rental cars make sense for rural Rhône-Alpes or the Alps, not for collecting parking tickets in the city center. Strikes and demonstrations can disrupt French trains, flights and local transport, so check both the airport and operator before a tightly timed connection.
Lyon safety: guard the bag, not just the restaurant booking
France is currently Level 2, exercise increased caution, because of terrorism and unrest. Lyon is a major city and transport hub, so stay alert in terminals, stations, crowded trams, nightlife areas and large public events. Pickpockets and phone thieves use distraction, especially around ticket machines, platforms and busy tourist areas. Keep passports and cards in separate secure places, close bags and never leave valuables visible in a vehicle. Demonstrations and strikes can begin with little warning and may affect roads or public transport. Avoid crowds that are turning tense and follow police instructions. France requires visitors to be able to prove identity, so carry an accepted document or secure copy appropriate to the situation. Lyon is generally manageable for visitors, but ordinary city precautions still apply after dark: use lit streets, confirm the correct taxi rank and do not accept unsolicited transport offers. Call 112 for emergency assistance. The city rewards wandering once you arrive, but the airport and railway network reward paying attention before the wandering starts.
