Why are fare classes and cabins important?

For the in-frequent flier, fare classes mean nothing.  For the frequent fliers and people looking to maximize their elite status, fare classes mean everything. Below is human readable explanation of each fare class and cabin on Delta Airlines domestic and international flights.

Cabin and fare information

Tickets purchased in basic economy are the cheapest priced. Basic economy class tickets have the fewest amenities and are the most restrictive.

Basic economy tickets can only be purchased in the E fare class and is seated in the main cabin on domestic and international flights.  There are very limited numbers of seats available in this fare class.

Aircraft

Basic Economy is a part of all Delta mainline and code share aircraft.  While it’s advertised as a separate cabin, it’s actually the shitty middle seats and unwanted seats.

How to upgrade

Sorry bro, you’re stuck.  No upgrades.

Main Cabin fare classes

Tickets purchase in main cabin (economy) can range in price with fares priced the same as basic economy to fares prices comparable with premium cabin fares.  Economy class amenities and restrictions vary greatly depending on the ticketed fare class.

Economy tickets can be purchased in the V,X,T,U,L,K,Q,H,S,M,B,Y fare classes and is seated in the main cabin on domestic and international flights.  There are limited numbers of seats available for the lower fare classes.

How to upgrade

Unlimited complimentary upgrades to Comfort+ and First Class are available based on your medallion status and purchased (ticketed) fare class.

Tickets purchased in Comfort+ have officially become a new cabin of service effective 5/2016.  This class and cabin are considered a part of Delta’s “Premium Experience” and are meant to provide a mid-point between economy and premium cabins on domestic and international flights. Comfort+ class amenities align closer to first/business class and restrictions closer to economy class.

Comfort+ tickets can only be purchased in the W fare class and is seated in the Comfort+ cabin on domestic and international flights.  There are reserved seats in a separate cabin for Comfort+.

How to upgrade

Unlimited complimentary upgrades to First Class are available based on your medallion status and purchased (ticketed) fare class.

Due to the way Delta handles ticketing, W fare classes upgrade priorities are supported by the fare basis code.  Unfortunately, this is not a easy thing to find.

You will find this frustrating since people in Main cabin could get upgraded to First Class ahead of you.

Tickets purchased in first class cabin can range in price dramatically with fares priced lower than full fare economy tickets to fares which require a second mortgage to purchase.  First class has the most amenities and is the least restrictive.

First class tickets can be purchased in the G,A,P,F fare classes on domestic and short-haul international flights. There are limited numbers of seats available in this cabin and usually fly completely full due to complimentary upgrades.

First class cabin is available on most Delta mainline and domestic code share partners aircraft.

  • B757
  • A319/320
  • Some E/CRJ) aircraft.

Cabin and fare information

Tickets purchased in the Premium Select cabin can are priced as a mid-point between main cabin and Delta One.  This cabin, like Delta One is designed to be a premium experience which corresponding fares priced higher than a full fare main cabin ticket, but lower than Delta One. Premium Select fare classes have more amenities than main cabin are are less restrictive than discount fare classes.

First class tickets can be purchased in the G,A,P,F fare classes on select international routes. There are limited numbers of seats available in this cabin.

Aircraft

Premium select cabin is available only on select Delta mainline aircraft.

Wide body:

  • A350
  • Select B777 (Beginning in 2018)

How to upgrade

There are no complimentary upgrades to Premium select cabin.  Diamond medallion members can redeem a SWU (Global Upgrade Certificate) to move to this cabin.

It should be noted that use of a SWU certificate for this cabin is not recommended.  SWU’s can (and should) be used to upgrade to Delta One.

Medallion members may be upgraded to the Premium select cabin in the event of Main cabin being oversold.

Tickets purchased in business cabin (Delta One) can range in price with some fares priced lower than full fare economy tickets to high-end fares which require a second mortgage to purchase.  The Delta One business class cabin has more amenities and is much less restrictive than main cabin or deeply discounted fare classes.

Delta One business class tickets can be purchased in the Z,I,D,C,J fare classes and is seated in a separate cabin. There are limited numbers of seats available in this cabin (varies per aircraft configuration).

Aircraft

Delta One cabine is available on almost all wide body and certain narrow body aircraft.

Wide body:

  • A350
  • A330
  • B777
  • B767

Narrow body:

  • Select B757

How to upgrade

There are no complimentary upgrades to the Delta One cabin.  Diamond medallion members can redeem a SWU (Global Upgrade Certificate) to move to this cabin.

Medallion members may be upgraded to the Delta One cabin in the event of Main cabin being oversold.
