Myanmar is one of those places that can make you wonder how the hell something this spectacular stayed off the mainstream tourism conveyor belt for so long.
Then you remember the complicated part.
Before the country’s current crisis, traveling through Myanmar could feel like discovering Southeast Asia before someone installed infinity pools and smoothie bowls everywhere. Yangon was chaotic, crumbling and magnificently weird. Shwedagon Pagoda was covered in enough gold to suggest Buddhism had briefly discovered unlimited financing.
Then there’s Bagan.
Thousands of temples scattered across a dusty plain make the landscape look like someone accidentally left the civilization slider turned all the way up. Add Inle Lake, mountains, monasteries, enormous Buddhas, colonial architecture and food influenced by India, China and Southeast Asia, and Myanmar has absolutely no shortage of reasons to make you say holy shit.
But this isn’t a destination where the current reality can be buried beneath travel-blog bullshit.
Since the 2021 military coup, Myanmar has endured armed conflict, political repression and serious instability. Travel conditions can change rapidly, some regions are extremely dangerous, and government advisories should be taken seriously. This isn’t the place for spontaneous YOLO tourism because airfare looked cheap on Tuesday.
And that’s what makes Myanmar frustrating.
It’s one of the most fascinating countries I’ve visited, and currently one of the hardest to casually recommend visiting.
The temples are extraordinary. The landscapes are beautiful. The history is fascinating.
Myanmar can absolutely wow you.
Just make sure the country is ready for your adventure before deciding you’re ready for Myanmar.

An airline magazine promised me colonial grandeur, Buddhist pagodas, and delicious food. Those marketing bastards got me. Yangon was a spectacular shitshow, but Shwedagon Pagoda delivered 99 meters of gold, diamonds, and enough beauty to briefly forget I eventually had to walk back outside.
