Welcome to Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai arrival: congratulations, the old city is actually nearby

You landed at Chiang Mai International Airport beside the city rather than in a distant province wearing Chiang Mai’s name as marketing. The old city, Nimman and riverside districts are generally a short road transfer away, although rush-hour traffic can still transform a tiny distance into a meditation exercise. Domestic and international facilities share the airport complex, so confirm the correct exit and pickup point. Use the public transportation counters and designated zones instead of following the first energetic stranger who announces a special price with the confidence of a man inventing it live.

Chiang Mai transport: taxis work, red trucks negotiate everything

Airports of Thailand lists flat-rate airport taxis, metered taxis, certified app-based rides, public buses, shuttle buses and rental cars. Metered taxis add an airport charge, while app pickups must use designated areas. Red songthaews also operate around Chiang Mai and can serve the airport, but confirm the route and fare before boarding because they may collect other passengers. The compact center is walkable in sections, but attractions outside town require road transport. Motorbikes are common and nimble, yet Thailand’s motorcycle crash rate is severe, so ride only with the correct licence, helmet and insurance rather than vacation-grade invincibility.

Chiang Mai safety: traffic and smoke are less charming than temples

Chiang Mai is generally welcoming, but keep bags secure in markets, open vehicles and crowded nightlife areas, and pre-arrange late-night transport. Official guidance warns about motorcycle collisions, bag snatching from motorbikes, drink spiking and theft while travelers sleep on buses or trains. Seasonal air pollution from regional burning can become unhealthy, particularly during the dry-season smoke period, so check local air-quality readings and reduce outdoor exertion when levels spike. Avoid political demonstrations and follow local instructions. The temples deserve your attention; the approaching motorbike and the air-quality index deserve it first.
