Welcome to Johannesburg Metro
Johannesburg arrival: welcome to the continent’s busiest handshake
You landed at O.R. Tambo International Airport in Kempton Park, east of central Johannesburg. This is South Africa’s principal aviation hub, not a charming little doorway where someone immediately hands you a safari hat. Immigration, baggage and terminal walking can take time, and power or refuelling disruptions sometimes add delays. Johannesburg rewards proper planning with museums, Soweto history, galleries and excellent regional access, but a tight connection is not permission to race downtown and gamble your onward flight. Keep valuables in carry-on luggage, move through public arrival areas efficiently and know your next transport before stepping outside.
O.R. Tambo transfer: the Gautrain is the rare obvious answer
The Gautrain runs directly from the airport to Sandton and connects onward through Johannesburg and Pretoria. Official airport information lists service roughly every 12 minutes between 05:15 and 22:00, so verify the current timetable before relying on it for an early or late flight. Accredited metered taxis and hotel shuttles use designated termini behind the airport hotels, and the airport information desk can direct you. If using an app-booked ride, confirm the registration and driver inside a safe pickup area. Do not accept unsolicited transport offers. For a rental car, stay on main routes, keep doors locked and valuables out of sight, and reject any navigation shortcut that turns a routine transfer into an accidental township tour.
Johannesburg safety: plan the route before someone else plans it
Johannesburg requires stronger situational awareness than a generic warning about watching your wallet. Violent robbery, carjacking and smash-and-grab theft occur, and criminals have followed travelers from O.R. Tambo before robbing them. Arrange a hotel pickup, use the Gautrain or book recognized transport, especially after dark. Do not walk from Gautrain stations at night, display jewellery or wait on the street holding a phone. Use main roads, avoid isolated areas and do not resist an armed robbery. Protests can become violent, so leave blocked roads rather than attempting to negotiate your way through. Johannesburg remains entirely visitable, but improvising transport, flashing valuables and treating every GPS route as gospel is an impressively efficient way to misunderstand the assignment.
