Columbus arrival: the airport is easy, construction keeps it humble

You landed at John Glenn Columbus International Airport east of downtown, where the terminal is manageable but ongoing airport development can rearrange familiar roads, parking and pickup habits. Follow current signs rather than an old screenshot from someone who swears they fly here constantly. Ground transportation sits across the Arrivals drive on level one, and rideshare passengers should wait until they have bags in hand before requesting a car. Confirm whether your destination is downtown, the university area, Easton or a suburb because Columbus spreads wider than its skyline suggests. A short drive on the map can become a longer tour of interchanges during rush hour or a major event.

Columbus transport: buses exist, but verify the route before boarding

COTA provides fixed-route bus service at the terminal, including Lines 7 and 24 in current planning documents. Route 7 connects the airport with downtown and Easton, but check the live trip planner because schedules and service patterns change. Taxis and rideshare vehicles use the airport’s designated ground-transport area. A rental car is the most flexible option for suburban offices, outer neighborhoods and trips beyond central Columbus. The city has no passenger rail link from the airport, so do not look for an imaginary platform beneath baggage claim. Downtown parking is usually available but may tighten during conventions, football games and festivals, when every traveler independently discovers the same garage entrance.

Columbus safety: winter roads and summer storms ruin confident driving

Central Columbus visitor districts are generally straightforward, but secure valuables in vehicles, stay on active routes at night and use verified transportation when leaving entertainment areas. Weather creates the more distinctive travel disruption. Central Ohio gets snow, ice, severe thunderstorms, flash flooding and sharp temperature swings. National Weather Service guidance notes that even modest snow or ice can make bridges, overpasses and untreated roads hazardous. Check warnings before renting a car, slow down in heavy rain and never drive through floodwater. During large university or sporting events, expect temporary road closures and dense pedestrian traffic. Columbus is navigable, but Ohio weather has never signed your itinerary.
