Melbourne arrival: the airport train remains a future tense

Good news: you made it to Melbourne. Bad news: you are still at Melbourne Airport (MEL), about 23 kilometres northwest of the city, and the railway station exists mainly in political speeches and future construction plans. The reliable city option is the express airport bus to Southern Cross Station. Melbourne Airport lists departures from outside Terminals 1, 3 and 4, generally every 10 minutes at peak times and every 15 minutes outside them, operating from 4:00 a.m. until 1:00 a.m. It does not run between 1:00 and 4:00 a.m., because apparently even airport transport deserves boundaries. Taxis wait at designated ranks outside Terminals 1, 2 and the Terminal 4 Transport Hub. Rideshare pickup depends on your terminal, so follow the current airport signs and in-app instructions rather than walking toward the first cluster of idling cars. Do not accept unsolicited taxi offers away from the official ranks. Public Transport Victoria buses leave from Terminal 4 and can be cheaper for suburban destinations, but the city trip usually requires a transfer. Match the transport to your actual address, not merely the word Melbourne.

Melbourne transport: trams, transfers and one terrifying hook turn

Once the airport bus reaches Southern Cross, trains, trams and buses cover central Melbourne and the inner suburbs well. Use the PTV journey planner, obtain a valid myki where required and check service changes before committing to a transfer. The free-tram zone covers much of the central business district, but it does not magically extend to every hotel with Melbourne in its marketing copy. Public route 901 links the airport with Broadmeadows Station in roughly 20 minutes and can suit northern or eastern destinations, while routes 478, 479 and 482 serve Airport West and Sunbury corridors. All leave from the Terminal 4 bus area. A taxi or rideshare is simpler for late arrivals, groups or addresses poorly served by transit. Renting a car makes sense for regional Victoria, not necessarily for a central-city stay. Melbourne uses toll roads, limited parking, tram lanes and hook turns at selected intersections, where right-turning vehicles wait on the left because ordinary geometry was apparently insufficient. Learn the rule before driving, never pass a stopped tram when passengers are crossing and check parking signs with the concentration normally reserved for legal contracts.

Melbourne safety: secure the bag and fear the fire rating

Melbourne is a major visitor city where routine urban precautions usually fit the situation. Keep passports and valuables controlled during crowded airport transfers, use designated pickup zones and move away from aggressive behavior rather than engaging it. On roads, remember that Australia drives on the left and pedestrians should check both directions around tram tracks and multi-lane intersections. Weather and regional travel create the sharper local risks. Victoria is one of the world’s most fire-prone regions. Before driving into forests, parks or wine regions during warm months, check the VicEmergency warnings, fire danger rating, park closures and VicTraffic road conditions. On Extreme or Catastrophic days, change the trip and leave high-risk areas early. Summer heat and ultraviolet radiation can be severe even when cloud cover makes sunscreen feel optional. At the coast, swim between red and yellow flags at patrolled beaches and treat rip-current warnings as instructions. Winter can bring cold rain and sudden weather changes rather than postcard snow downtown, so carry layers and allow flight or road delays during major systems. Melbourne is highly navigable, but the safe version involves official airport transport, respect for trams and a willingness to abandon a regional plan when Victoria’s fire map starts glowing.
