Welcome to Cancún

Cancún arrival: survive the sales gauntlet, then find your ride

You landed at Cancún International Airport, gateway to the Caribbean and a terminal complex where seemingly everyone has a clipboard, a transport offer or a deeply urgent opportunity for you to attend a presentation. Ignore unsolicited pitches and follow signs to the transport service you actually booked. For the Hotel Zone, downtown Cancún, Playa del Carmen or Tulum, practical options include a prearranged transfer, authorized prepaid airport transport, a rental car or the scheduled airport bus. Keep your reservation details offline and confirm the correct terminal pickup point because CUN has multiple terminals and confidently waiting at the wrong one is a very Cancún way to begin a vacation.

Cancún transport: airport bus or booked transfer, not parking-lot roulette

The airport bus serves Cancún and Riviera Maya destinations, including a direct fixed stop in the Hotel Zone, with departures from terminals 2, 3 and 4. It works well if its stop matches your destination, but you may still need local transport for the final section. A prearranged door-to-door transfer is simpler for resorts far along the coast, groups or late arrivals. Use authorized prepaid airport taxi services only. Do not accept an unlicensed ride or assume an app pickup will be effortless, since disputes involving licensed taxi drivers have caused roadblocks near Cancún hotels and disrupted airport trips. Leave substantial time for the return journey, especially during peak traffic, construction, weather or transport protests.

Cancún safety: resort lighting does not create a force field

Quintana Roo requires increased caution because shootings between rival criminal groups have injured and killed bystanders. Tourist areas receive significant security attention, but violent incidents have occurred in and around Cancún’s popular districts. Stay in well-lit tourist zones after dark, avoid isolated streets and beaches, watch your drinks and do not buy drugs. Use established transport arranged by the airport, hotel or a known provider, and share your trip details. Petty theft is common around crowded terminals and buses, so keep passports, phones and bags under direct control. Caribbean currents can also be dangerous despite water that looks designed by a tourism board. Obey beach flags, do not swim alone and stay out of the sea when red or black warnings are posted.
