The city center is close by road, but altitude can turn a short staircase into a personal referendum on fitness. Peru’s health ministry recommends hydration, light meals and rest during the first hours at high elevation. Take symptoms seriously, especially severe breathlessness, confusion or worsening headache. For the airport transfer, use an authorized taxi from the designated service area, a ride arranged by established accommodation or a verified app-based pickup. Do not follow an eager stranger offering a bargain ride, because altitude sickness does not need a robbery subplot.

The airport has no passenger railway station, so a taxi or arranged transfer is the practical route to a hotel or to the separate rail stations used for Machu Picchu journeys. Peru’s airport operator has designated space for authorized taxi service at CUZ, and Cusco’s municipality provides a plate and driver lookup for checking taxi authorization. Confirm which rail station your ticket names because Wanchaq, San Pedro and Poroy are not interchangeable decorations. Regional buses operate from Cusco’s land terminal, but mountainous night travel carries a higher crash risk. For Machu Picchu and trekking routes, verify train, road and site status immediately before departure, particularly during the November to May rainy season.

Cusco safety: fake taxis, thin air and protests can wreck the itinerary

Street theft is a significant problem in Cusco, and criminals posing as taxi drivers or tour operators target arriving travelers. Use a licensed telephone, app-based or hotel-arranged taxi, keep bags under direct control and avoid walking alone in quiet areas after dark. Personal and sexual assaults are infrequent but have occurred in the Cusco area, including cases involving unscrupulous tour operators, so book established providers and keep control of drinks. Political protests can block roads, suspend trains and disrupt airport access with little notice. Never attempt to cross a blockade. Rain can trigger landslides on routes toward Machu Picchu and the surrounding mountains. Carry water, medication, warm clothing and enough local currency to handle delays rather than assuming the itinerary is sacred.
