Welcome to Lisbon Metro

Lisbon arrival: seven kilometres from tiles and hills

Good news: you made it to Lisbon. Bad news: you are still at the airport, surrounded by luggage and the dangerous belief that seven kilometres must be a trivial distance. Lisbon Airport is unusually close to the centre, and all arriving passengers enter through Terminal 1. Terminal 2 handles departures only for several low-cost airlines, with a free airport shuttle connecting the terminals. That matters on the return journey, when confidently following signs for the wrong terminal becomes an unnecessarily expensive personality test. The airport says the centre is about 20 minutes away, but Lisbon is a city of hills, cobbles and staircases. Check the exact address before deciding that dragging a suitcase from the nearest station counts as a charming introduction to Portugal.

LIS transfer: red metro, small-bag bus or licensed taxi

The Metro Red Line leaves directly from the arrivals area and reaches Saldanha in about 20 minutes, where connections continue toward the historic centre and other neighbourhoods. The airport station operates from 6:30 a.m. until 1:00 a.m. Travel requires a Navegante card loaded with the appropriate fare, although contactless bank-card payment is also available on the metro. Oriente, Lisbon’s major rail and bus interchange, is roughly 10 minutes away by metro, which is useful if Lisbon is merely the opening act before another Portuguese city. Urban buses also serve the airport, but the operator limits luggage to 50 by 40 by 20 centimetres. If your bag resembles portable furniture, the bus has already judged you. Taxis queue outside the terminals and the airport estimates a typical central-city fare around 10 to 15 euros, depending on traffic. Confirm the meter is running and request a receipt. App-based vehicles collect from the designated area at P2 on Floor 2. The airport explicitly warns passengers never to accept rides solicited inside the terminal, so treat every roaming transportation entrepreneur as an unsolicited plot twist.

Lisbon safety: charming trams attract talented distraction thieves

Lisbon is a heavily visited capital where the most common visitor problem is theft rather than cinematic danger. Official travel guidance warns that pickpockets and bag thieves operate on public transport and around crowded bus and tram stops, sometimes in teams using distraction. Keep phones, wallets and passports secured rather than dangling from an open bag while you photograph the scenery. Carry a copy of your passport separately and avoid storing every valuable in one wonderfully convenient target. Trams, metro platforms, busy squares and tourist queues deserve more attention than an empty residential street simply because crowds give thieves cover. Short-notice transport strikes can also disrupt travel, so check operating information before relying on a tightly timed airport connection. Lisbon remains straightforward to explore, but its beauty does not repeal petty crime, gravity on steep streets or the consequences of leaving for LIS with exactly no scheduling margin.
