London City arrival: the runway actually understood the assignment

HOLY SHIT. You landed at London City Airport, the compact Docklands gateway designed for people who would prefer to reach London before forgetting why they came. Follow border and baggage signs, then decide where in the enormous city you actually need to go. LCY sits in east London near Canary Wharf rather than beside the more distant airport geography inflicted by several competitors. Keep a contactless payment card or mobile wallet ready for public transport. The airport name is unusually honest, but London still expects you to know which station, district and branch of identically named hotel you booked.

LCY transport: the DLR wins unless engineering says otherwise

London City Airport has its own Docklands Light Railway station, with step-free platform and train access information available from Transport for London. The DLR connects toward Bank, Tower Gateway, Stratford, Greenwich, Lewisham and Woolwich Arsenal through interchange points. Use TfL’s live status and journey planner before boarding because planned closures and service changes occur. Contactless payment works across the network when you tap in and out correctly. Buses and a taxi rank are also available at the station. Only licensed black taxis may be hailed or taken from a rank; minicabs must be booked. London makes transportation excellent, then adds enough branches and weekend engineering to keep humility alive.

London safety: mind the gap and the fake cab

London public transport is generally safe and heavily used, but keep phones, passports and bags secure in crowded trains, stations and nightlife areas. At night, use planned public transport, a licensed black taxi or a pre-booked minicab. Never enter an unbooked private-hire vehicle. DLR stations may be unstaffed, although trains carry a staff member, so use help points and move to a populated area if uncomfortable. Check the destination display before boarding and stay behind platform markings. Report emergencies to 999 and non-emergency police matters to 101. The driverless train is not the threat; the distracted traveler standing beside an open bag usually handles that role.
