The Maldives looks like someone opened Photoshop, dragged the saturation slider irresponsibly far to the right, added 1,000-ish tropical islands and then started charging $27 for a cocktail.

And somehow, you’re still going to want the cocktail.

Because holy shit, this place is beautiful.

The water really is that blue. The sand really is that white. Overwater villas really do sit above lagoons filled with tropical fish, rays and sharks casually swimming underneath your room like someone installed the world’s most expensive screensaver.

The Maldives is basically tropical paradise turned up until the knob breaks.

It’s also a fascinating exercise in separating you from your money.

That gorgeous private-island resort? Congratulations, you’re now financially and geographically committed to it. Dinner costs whatever dinner costs because your alternative restaurant is approximately nine miles across the Indian Ocean. Seaplane transfers can cost more than flights between actual countries. And once you’ve paid for the overwater villa, you’ll discover there are apparently several exciting new definitions of “not included.”

But the Maldives can absolutely deliver the experience you’re imagining.

Snorkeling can be spectacular. Diving can be world-class. Sunsets become annoyingly perfect. And doing absolutely nothing suddenly feels like a legitimate scheduled activity.

Just understand what you’re booking.

The Maldives isn’t really about exploring endless attractions. It’s about finding an absurdly beautiful piece of ocean and temporarily surrendering to it.

Come for paradise.

Stay because the next boat isn’t until Thursday.

And because leaving something this fucking beautiful feels like terrible financial planning.
