ValuJet 592: Disaster in the Everglades

ValuJet Flight 592 Memorial is a Dark Tourism site devoted to honoring the lives lost and to reflect on the importance of aviation safety.

On warm Florida day in 1996, ValuJet 592, bound for Atlanta departed the Miami Airport just as it had hundreds of times before. Minutes after takeoff, a catastrophic emergency began to rapidly unfold in the cargo hold of flight 592 – a fire, caused by improperly stored oxygen-generating canisters ignited and rapidly spreading to nearby cargo, luggage and everything combustible. The rapid progression of the fire, fueled by the oxygen-generating canisters, filled the passenger cabin with thick smoke while the flight crew urgently attempted to return to the airport.

Ultimately, the heroic efforts to land the crippled aircraft were in vain, as the intense heat and smoke overwhelmed the systems and crew who lost control of the plane, causing its firey, final resting place just 20 miles (36 kilometers) from the runway.

Tragically, the plane crashed into a remote part of the South Eastern Everglades, instantly claiming all lives aboard. The event stunned the nation, leading to a profound overhaul in aviation safety protocols and awareness around cargo regulations.

ValuJet 592 Memorial Uncensored

In 1999, three-years after the crash, the Flight 592 memorial was built near the crash site of ValuJet 592. Due to the remote location and overall inaccessibility of the impact site, this was a logical place to create the small, poorly marked dark tourism memorial. The ValuJet 592 Memorial site is adjacent to Highway 41 (Tamiami trail), about 100 meters East of the L-67 lock on the unpaved access road on the North side of the canal.

This somber memorial was designed by students from the American Institute of Architecture to honor the memory of those who perished, with names of all 110 victims etched in granite stone, standing as remembrance of 110 souls that perished. As a result of these horrific events, significant and far-reaching changes were made to the airline industry. These changes are still in effect, marking one of the safest eras in modern aviation history.
