Descend into the atmospheric tunnels and cells of Adelaide Gaol, then inspect the crypts, memorials, and eccentric stonework of West Terrace Cemetery. For larger-scale unease, the former quarantine station and coastal defenses around Torrens Island tell less polished stories of settlement and disease.
The South Australian Museum’s natural-history collections and the city’s arcades provide civilized shelter when the heat gets theatrical. Outside town, ancient rock landscapes in the Adelaide Hills and coastal cliffs remind you the neat city grid is a very temporary human arrangement.
Best Photo Spots
Use the River Torrens footbridges and cultural precinct at dusk, then head west for long beach horizons and jetty silhouettes. The Adelaide Hills offer city panoramas, while the gaol’s stone corridors reward careful low-light composition where photography is permitted.
