The famous painted-car installation is gloriously ridiculous, but the better detour is Palo Duro Canyon, a vast red-rock cut in otherwise flat country that sneaks up on drivers with excellent comic timing.

Palo Duro’s overlooks and hoodoo formations glow at sunrise and sunset; include trails or people to reveal how much terrain is hiding below the plains.
