Climb the strange flat-topped El Yunque, seek the archaeological traces of Taíno culture, and inspect the weathered colonial fortifications guarding the bay. The Cruz de la Parra is wrapped in centuries of disputed history, which is far more interesting than pretending every old object has a tidy origin story.

The bay, colorful low-rise streets, waterfalls, and El Yunque’s silhouette are magnificent after rain. Humidity attacks equipment enthusiastically, so carry protection and ask before photographing residents.
