Bradley arrival: Hartford’s airport is hiding in Windsor Locks

Good news: you made it to Hartford. Bad news: you are actually in Windsor Locks, because airport geography enjoys keeping expectations flexible. Bradley International Airport sits about 30 minutes north of Hartford and also serves western Massachusetts. Most scheduled flights use Terminal A, while certain international arrivals clear customs in Terminal B. Check the terminal and meeting point before marching confidently toward the wrong curb. BDL is smaller and calmer than the major New York and Boston airports, but it still offers substantial nonstop service and a full ground transportation center. Collect the luggage, follow the signs and resist turning baggage claim into a family reunion traffic jam.

BDL transfer: the bus is direct, the train needs a bus first

The 30-Bradley Flyer links Terminal A with downtown Hartford and Union Station in about 30 minutes. Route 24 connects the airport with Windsor Locks rail station, where Hartford Line trains continue toward Hartford, New Haven and Springfield. There is no rail platform inside the airport, so anyone promising a direct airport train has skipped an important bus-shaped detail. Taxis wait outside arrivals between doors 2 and 3, authorized ride-app pickup is outside door 2 and prearranged car services meet passengers in the terminal. Rental cars are in the adjacent Ground Transportation Center, reached by a sheltered walkway from Terminal A without a shuttle. A car is useful for rural Connecticut and the Berkshires; Hartford itself does not require one for every trip.

Connecticut safety: snow turns confidence into roadside furniture

Windsor Locks and Hartford are straightforward destinations, but use normal city precautions around stations, parking areas and late-night transit. Keep luggage with you and use the airport’s designated taxi and ride-app zones. The most disruptive local hazard is winter weather. Connecticut advises avoiding unnecessary driving during storms, winterizing vehicles and carrying warm clothing and emergency supplies. Check current road conditions before leaving BDL, slow down on snow or ice and never crowd a plow. Summer thunderstorms can also interrupt flights and outdoor plans. If your itinerary crosses into Massachusetts, confirm conditions there separately because New England weather can change jurisdiction faster than your rental-car agreement.
