Welcome to Harrisburg Metro

Harrisburg arrival: your airport is in Middletown, naturally

Welcome to Harrisburg International Airport (MDT), located in Middletown because airport naming remains a creative-writing exercise. The terminal is a short drive from downtown Harrisburg and also works as a gateway to Hershey and Lancaster. Taxis collect from the ground transportation center on the first floor of the parking garage. App-based rides use the designated pickup zone on the garage’s third floor, and curbside pickup is not permitted. Rental cars are the practical choice for Hershey attractions, Amish Country or a multi-stop regional trip. If you are staying downtown, a taxi or app ride is the simplest direct transfer. Check the garage level before requesting the car, because watching your driver orbit a concrete building is not the cultural experience Pennsylvania intended.

Harrisburg transport: trains nearby, not attached to your suitcase

RabbitTransit route 7 links the airport with nearby rail stations, including Middletown, where Amtrak’s Keystone corridor serves Harrisburg, Lancaster and Philadelphia. The station is not inside the terminal, so this is a bus, taxi or app connection rather than an airport train. Confirm the day’s bus and train schedules before committing, especially during evenings and weekends. Downtown Harrisburg is compact enough for walking around the Capitol and riverfront, while a car becomes more useful for Hershey, Gettysburg, Lancaster County and rural stops. Regional highways are straightforward until construction, snow or an event turns them into a parking exhibition. For a flight departure, use Pennsylvania’s live road information during bad weather and leave a buffer. The train can make Philadelphia trips practical, but it cannot apologize when your airport connection was planned to the minute.

Harrisburg safety: river views come with actual river rules

Use normal city precautions around transport hubs and nightlife: keep bags controlled, park in lit areas and verify app drivers before entering. The Susquehanna River is the location-specific hazard visitors underestimate. Water levels and currents can change quickly, and a dangerous low-head dam sits just south of City Island. Do not swim or boat near the dam, avoid the river when it is high or flooded and use a life jacket for paddling. Pennsylvania flooding can develop quickly from heavy rain, tropical systems, snowmelt or ice jams. Never walk or drive through floodwater or around a barricade. Winter storms can also restrict roads and disrupt flights, so monitor official weather and 511PA before an airport run. Harrisburg is generally manageable for visitors. Just remember that the calm-looking river and the harmless-looking weather forecast have both ruined more plans than the parking garage ever will.

Centralia: The Town Where Hell Is Technically Downstairs

Beneath the quiet forests of eastern Pennsylvania, an underground mine fire has been burning continuously since 1962, and it destroyed an entire town in the process. Centralia wasn’t abandoned because the mines closed. It was erased because the ground itself became uninhabitable. Today, only empty streets, forgotten cemeteries, and an invisible inferno remain, creating one of America’s most infamous dark tourism destinations. Once home to the legendary Graffiti Highway and widely associated with the eerie world of Silent Hill, Centralia is a haunting reminder that sometimes the scariest places aren’t fiction at all.

Arlington National Cemetery: One Name I Actually Knew

Arlington National Cemetery is more than famous graves and perfectly aligned white headstones. It’s hundreds of thousands of individual stories, including one belonging to a girl I grew up with who made the ultimate sacrifice. Add the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and an absolutely fucking gorgeous autumn backdrop, and this is one place where eventually you just put the camera down and remember.
