Charleston arrival: the airport is north and the cobblestones are elsewhere

You landed at Charleston International Airport in North Charleston, not beside the Battery with a carriage waiting to validate your vacation fantasy. Downtown Charleston, the harbor and the historic peninsula sit southeast of the terminal, while beaches such as Folly and Sullivan’s Island require another road leg. Decide whether your trip is centered on the walkable peninsula or spread across the coast before choosing transport. A downtown hotel can reduce driving once you arrive. A beach house can make a rental car useful. The Lowcountry is charming, but it has arranged its attractions across bridges and waterways with complete indifference to your luggage.

Charleston transport: the public bus works if your schedule has manners

CARTA runs scheduled airport service to Tanger Outlets and downtown Charleston, with a covered stop directly outside baggage claim. Check the current schedule before committing, especially at night or on weekends. Taxis are requested at the ground transportation booth in the center median, permitted rideshare pickups use the signed shelter across the roadways, and rental desks are beyond baggage claim. Use the bus for a budget-conscious downtown transfer, or choose a direct ride when carrying bags or staying beyond the peninsula. Charleston has transport options. It simply expects you to know whether you booked Charleston, North Charleston or a beach separated by several bridges.

Charleston safety: floodwater and rip currents ruin excellent footwear

Charleston’s practical visitor hazards are coastal. The city states that all properties are in a flood zone, and floodwater can contain wastewater, bacteria and debris. Never drive through a flooded roadway, obey closures and monitor weather during hurricane season. At the beaches, check the National Weather Service rip-current forecast, swim near lifeguards and do not fight a current by swimming directly toward shore. Keep normal awareness with valuables in busy visitor areas and lock vehicles. A sunny street can flood on the wrong tide, and a calm-looking gap in the surf can be the most dangerous water. The ocean does not care how carefully you coordinated the outfit.
